چکیده

A Chen-Lubensky energy is used to investigate phase transitions from chiral nematic to smectic C* and smectic A* liquid crystal phases. We consider a liquid crystalline material Ω confined between two parallel plates, where the dimensions of Ω are assumed to be large relative both to the width of a smectic layer and the material’s chiral pitch. We take boundary conditions so that the smectic phase melts at the plates’ surfaces and prove the existence of energy minimizers in an admissible set consisting of order parameters Ψ ∈ H 0(Ω) and molecular directors n ∈ W(Ω; S). Then under the physically observed assumption that the Frank elasticity constants become large near a phase transition, we establish estimates for the transition region separating phases. In particular we derive analytic estimates proving that chirality lowers the transition temperature regime above which minimizers are nematic and below which minimizers are in a smectic phase. ∗Research supported by NSF grants DMS-0306516 and DMS-0456286.

Phase behavior in the reentrant-nematic region of chiral frustrated smectic liquid crystals

A high-resolution ac calorimetric study has been carried out on two homologous polar liquid crystals with aromatic cores containing three phenyl groups and a flexible chiral linking group. The expected smectic polymorphism occurs, and there are several prominent thermal features in the nematic range between smecticAd and smectic-C̃ phases. It is suggested on the basis of characteristic thermal s...

Generation of frustrated liquid crystal phases by mixing an achiral nematic-smectic-C mesogen with an antiferroelectric chiral smectic liquid crystal.

By mixing the achiral liquid crystal HOAB, exhibiting a nematic (N)-smectic-C (SmC) mesophase sequence, with the chiral antiferroelectric liquid crystal (AFLC) (S,S)-M7BBM7, forming the antiferroelectric SmC(a)(*) phase, at least seven different mesophases have been induced which neither component forms on its own: a twist-grain-boundary (TGB(*)) phase, two or three blue phases, the untilted Sm...

Properties and Applications of Ferroelectric Liquid Crystals

The ferroelectric modes of liquid crystals which allow for easy reorientation of the direction of polarization make liquid crystals an attractive element to use for applications such as optical storage, and optical switching. Three schemes for achieving ferroelectricity are discussed: chiral smectic alignment, achiral “banana-shaped” smectic alignment, and the nematic phase that comes from stro...

Two-dimensional chiral model for liquid crystals, bent hard needles: a Monte Carlo simulation.

The liquid crystalline behavior of a two dimensional (2D) model of hard needles bent into a "zigzag shape" is studied. This model, originally designed to study two dimensional chiral segregation, also shows liquid crystalline behavior and has some anomalous features which are contrasted in relation to the following: (i) Most of the microscopical models used to study liquid crystals have a symme...
